Board Appointments

“We choose Executives in Africa to partner with us on board appointments because of their expertise and dedication.”

Group CEO – Automotive

Companies seeking non-executive board appointments benefit significantly from using an executive search firm because it ensures access to a broad talent pool and a rigorous, impartial assessment process. Independent directors are increasingly valued for their strategic insight, commercial judgement and contribution to strong governance. Search firms help secure individuals with no prior ties to the business while supporting diversity goals and reinforcing robust board structures.

Board Appointments Search Process

Step 1
Briefing & Role Profile Agreement

The search begins with the stakeholder briefing, which identifies what the appointment must deliver to support your strategic aims. This may include technical expertise, governance strengths, mentoring capability or access to wider networks.

The briefing covers your company background and purpose, growth plans, strategic milestones, board gap analysis, the required profile, conflicts, time commitment and compensation. With disciplined project management, we typically deliver an initial longlist within 2-3 weeks.

Step 2
Research & Profiling

We begin every search by building a target list of companies and locations and shaping an initial longlist of candidates sourced through our extensive networks, targeted research, past assignments, and directly sourced recommendations.

We share the raw mapping data, feedback, and longlist profiles with you to confirm search parameters and refine requirements. Together, we assess fit, identify any conflicts, remove unsuitable candidates and prioritise high-interest individuals for the next stage of the search.

Step 3
Approaches & Initial Screening

Confidential approaches are handled by experienced executive search consultants and research associates using telephone, messaging or email outreach. Our position as a global search consultancy headquartered in the UK provides credibility and impartiality when engaging potential candidates in early conversations.

Exploratory discussions at this stage help identify potential conflicts of interest and provide an early assessment of alignment with the board’s requirements.

Step 4
Interim Shortlist Meeting

This step provides a level of transparency not offered by all executive search firms. The longlist is reviewed, potential candidates are discussed, and questions are addressed.

A calibration check at this stage confirms alignment on expectations and approach before progressing further.

Step 5
In-depth Interview

Our rigorous board assessments begin with an extensive interview evaluating executive and board experience, governance style, conflict resolution and strategic and commercial value.

Psychometric and leadership tools are added where appropriate.

Step 6
Written Evidence

Candidates then complete case studies or provide performance evidence aligned to the agreed board requirements. A second interviewer is involved to provide broader perspective, reduce individual bias and ensure a balanced assessment.

This process encourages thorough discussion so that all candidates are evaluated consistently.

Step 7
Final Shortlist Presentation

This stage brings together all prior work in a meeting where the final shortlist of recommended candidates is presented. The shortlist is supported by a report detailing the process, key facts and figures, reasons some candidates declined and market perceptions of the client.

Each shortlisted candidate is accompanied by an individual report including a career overview, board and committee experience, written evidence, a board CV and the consultant’s commentary on suitability.

Step 8
Client Interviews

Once the client selects candidates for interview, direct interaction between both parties begins.

Executives in Africa coordinates the interview schedule, prepares candidates for the process and collects feedback from both parties after each discussion, while managing expectations throughout.

Step 9
Board Appointment

We provide guidance and support in preparing and extending the offer to the selected candidate, as well as helping both parties navigate any outstanding conflicts of interest, if applicable.

Where ratification of the appointment by the Board is required, we can prepare summary reports in line with your specific requirements.
